I don't know how I came up with the idea of crochet Medusa hair, but I guess it only makes sense when you're a classics teacher and your hobby is crochet. I think the idea may have come from watching Jim Henson's Storyteller episode about Perseus in class, which has a Medusa that has always made an impression on me. Anyway, I'd been thinking about it for a while when for Christmas 2017 we had a Fright Night party with the scout leaders and I finally had an occasion to wear it. My original idea was making an actual wig, which would basically be a beanie with lots of snakes attached, but as that would be a lot of work and very warm to wear to a party, I decided to make a hair band with a single row of snakes in stead. I love to make cute versions of scary things, so I decided to make friendly little snakes with little black eyes like my amigurumi usually have and bright red tongues sticking out.
I bought a simple hair band as a basis and attached the snakes with pipe cleaners, so I could bend them in different positions (see picture). I also crocheted around the hairband to hide the pipe cleaners. My original plan was to wear it with a Roman dress I made before, but then I found a cheap green glitter dress which matched the mermaid leggings I already had perfectly, so I switched to a party style Medusa. I used a lemon net to paint snake skin on parts of my face and green lip stick and eye shadow to finish the look. I think I stood out nicely among all zombies and witches, though not everyone understood who I was supposed to be...
